News Release

WHITEHORSE – The Yukon Information and Privacy Commissioner releases the following statement about a breach of Yukon student information.

"Yesterday I was informed about a privacy breach involving Yukon student information. According to information released by the Government of British Columbia, a hard drive containing the personal information of millions of British Columbia and Yukon students has gone missing. It was reported that the hard drive is unencrypted. Details about the breach can be found on the Government of Yukon and the Government of British Columbia websites.

I am very concerned about the magnitude of this breach and the sensitivity of the personal information on the hard drive. The Department of Education has informed me they will submit a breach report to my office. Once I receive the report, I will be working with them to examine the cause of the breach and ensure a breach of this nature does not recur."
