Ombudsman to release report this week into fairness complaint regarding communications about sexualized abuse allegations at Hidden Valley Elementary School

Tue, Sep 05, 2023

Yukon Ombudsman Jason Pedlar will release an investigative report later this week into a complaint of unfairness regarding the Department of Education’s failure to notify parents about allegations of sexualized abuse at Hidden Valley Elementary School (HVES). The report on this investigation will be issued publicly on Thursday, September 7, 2023.

The report will be posted on the Yukon Ombudsman’s website at www.yukonombudsman.ca, along with a news release. Notifications of the report’s publication will also be posted on the Ombudsman’s social media accounts on Twitter/X, Facebook and LinkedIn.

The complaint of unfairness was made to the Ombudsman in October 2021 by a parent of a student at HVES. The parent felt it was unfair that it took 19 months for the department to inform them, and other parents, about allegations of sexualized abuse of a student by an educational assistant at the school.

The Ombudsman is an independent officer of the Yukon Legislative Assembly who looks into complaints from citizens of unfairness in the delivery of services by the Yukon government and other public authorities.
